Location: Ridge Hill, 1 Ridge Hill Blvd, Yonkers, NY 10710  map
Instructor: Scott Dengrove
Date and Time: Saturday, December 14th, 2:00PM - 6:00 PM (Rain/Snow Date Dec 15th)

DESCRIPTION

Westchester's Ridge Hill is an outdoor mall unlike any other. Featuring a wide variety of local and national retailers complemented by fabulous restaurants and one-of-a-kind entertainment. During the holiday season, Ridge Hill comes alive with holiday lights all along the main strip headlined by a 45' tall lighting Christmas Tree!

Come explore how night time transforms this fabulous urban oasis with beautiful holiday lighting, set against a majestic blue twilight sky. It's the perfect place to practice low-light cityscapes, night time traffic trails and blue hour photography without schlepping all the way down to New York City.

For this workshop we have graciously been given special permission by Ridge Hill management to use tripods and other low light equipment to capture the special ambiance of Ridge Hill at twilight during the holidays. Topics include equipment and camera controls for night time photography, using your tripod safely, composing great night shots, blue hour photography, traffic trails, capturing the magic of holiday lights, and using holiday light bokeh to enhance your composition.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The workshop will begin with an introduction and then we'll dive right in to the material. For the first 2 hours of the workshop, photography skills and techniques will be taught with a mixture of lecture and demonstrations in an indoor climate controlled meeting space.

You will then be given free time to create your own photographs using the techniques you have learned. Your instructor will be roaming around providing individual attention to each participant helping to make your photographs the best they can be.

WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?

This workshop is open to Level II - IV photographers with DSLR or Mirrorless cameras with manual settings and interchangeable lenses who want to explore low light and night time photography (no smart phones, tablets, or point and shoot cameras please). Not sure what level you are? Click here to find out. Students should be comfortable shooting in full manual mode, have a camera capable of manual exposure settings and own a good sturdy tripod.

TRANSPORTATION

This special field trip takes place entirely at Ridge Hill in Yonkers, participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from. There is ample parking available in five garages conveniently located throughout the property. The cost is $4 to park on weekends for up to 6 hours. You will meet your instructor there, full details will be given prior to the workshop.

Ridge Hill is also accessible by taking the 78 Bee-Line bus with drop off points right outside the Market Street garage at Ridge Hill.

WHAT TO BRING

Please bring your fully charged camera, tripod and any accessories you'd like to have, see "Equipment Recommendations" below for details.

Money for parking, cash or credit cards are accepted, paid at the kiosks located at garage entrances prior to leaving.

Ridge Hill is a large sprawling outdoor mall, and we will be standing for quite a bit of the workshop in cold to freezing temperatures, especially when taking night shots. Comfortable shoes are a must! You'll also want to dress in warm layers with gloves that will allow you enough dexterity to operate your camera as it can tend to get cold and windy, especially once the sun sets.

EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

All participants, no matter the amount of equipment they have, will find enjoyment and learn something from participating in this workshop. However, we do have some recommendations that will help to ensure you get the most value out of the workshop.

We recommend bringing both telephoto and wide angle lenses. There are beautiful large scale architectural shots, which are best captured with a wide angle lens, however you may also want to take detail shots for which you will find a telephoto lens is best suited.

A good sturdy tripod that can support your camera rig is a must. Tripods with larger diameter legs are recommended for long exposure shots, as well as if the wind picks up, as there is some elevation at Ridge Hill.

A cable release will help eliminate vibration from your fingers when activating the shutter for photos with a long exposure. An ND filter can also be helpful to allow for extra long shutter speeds.

A small flashlight with a red filter or bulb is recommended to help view your camera controls once it gets dark. The red color will help to preserve your night vision and make it easier to see details with the lower light levels.

Further equipment recommendations will be provided in a detailed email prior to the field trip.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As this workshop is 4 hours in length, you should be prepared to do quite a bit of standing when taking night shots and some walking, comfortable shoes are a must!

Participants may not assert exclusive control over walkways, pathways or any other property at Ridge Hill. In addition, no other guest of Ridge Hill may be blocked from their enjoyment and usage of the facility or inconvenienced. It is the responsibility of all participants to keep the public safe around equipment. Participants will be held responsible for any damage or injuries caused by their equipment.
